A backwards-planned timeline for relocating to Memphis around a job start date.
How to Plan a Memphis Move Around Your Start Date
Working backwards from day one so you are not unpacking the night before it.
Almost every relocation problem we see traces back to the same thing: planning forwards from today instead of backwards from day one.
Work backwards
- Day one
Fixed point. Everything else is measured from here. - Move-in
Aim for several days earlier, not the night before. You will want at least one full day that is not a work day. - Lease signing and utilities
Utilities take lead time; arrange them as soon as the lease is signed. - Application
Submit once you have toured and your documents are ready. - Touring
Self-guided or video, from live availability. - Search start
Roughly 30 to 45 days before your move-in date.
Build in slack where it is cheap
The cheapest slack is at the start of the search and the end of the move-in window. The most expensive is assuming your furniture, your utilities and your first shift will all land on the same day.

Frequently asked questions
What if my start date is not confirmed?
Search, but do not sign until it is. Tell us the situation and we will keep you posted on what is available.
How long does an application take?
It depends on how quickly documents and references come back. Having them ready removes most of the delay.
