Employer relocation guide

Moving to Memphis for FedEx?

Practical housing guidance for renters relocating to Memphis for a logistics role — shift work, choosing an area, and leasing before you arrive.

Which building? This employer is a network, not an address

“FedEx Memphis” is not a place. FedEx runs several distinct Memphis operations under different parts of the business, and they are scattered across the city — downtown, east Memphis, the Hacks Cross corridor in the southeast, and the airport itself. A ramp job at the World Hub and a corporate role at a headquarters building are different commutes, different hours and different neighbourhoods.

The operating company matters as much as the employer name. Confirm which entity you are joining and which building you report to before you look at a single apartment.

Cited from public sources and checked in August 2026. FedEx operates additional Memphis facilities beyond those listed; confirm your own reporting location with your employer.
Site What it is Address ZIP Part of the city
FedEx World Hub Air sorting hub at Memphis International Airport; the overnight operation. Reported at roughly 1.6 million square feet Sprankel Avenue, at Memphis International Airport (sources list 2753 and 2903) 38118 area South Memphis, at the airport
FedEx Express World Headquarters Corporate offices for FedEx Express 3610 Hacks Cross Road Southeast Memphis Hacks Cross corridor, southeast
FedEx Corporation headquarters Corporate offices 942 Shady Grove Road South East Memphis East Memphis
FedEx Logistics global headquarters Corporate offices in the former Gibson Guitar building, opened April 2022 145 Lt. George W. Lee Avenue Downtown Downtown Memphis
FedEx Ship Center Customer shipping counter 4450 Distriplex Cove 38118 Southeast Memphis

These are genuinely different parts of the city. An apartment that works for a downtown corporate role may be impractical for an overnight shift at the airport hub, and the reverse is equally true.

Our rentals are in the Raleigh area of northeast Memphis (38128), which is a different part of the city again from the airport and from Hacks Cross. Tell us which building you report to and we will tell you honestly whether what we manage is a sensible search area for you — including when it is not.

On drive times. We do not publish estimated commutes to any FedEx facility. Traffic around the airport and the hub concentrates sharply at sort times. Map the route from the actual building address and drive it in both directions at the hours you will really travel.

Quick answers for renters

If you are relocating to Memphis for a role with FedEx, your housing decision is shaped by
two things most relocation guides ignore: the hours you will actually work, and how quickly you
need to be in place. This guide is written around both.

The airport and logistics area

Memphis International Airport (MEM) sits south of the city core, inside the Interstate 240
loop, and anchors a large concentration of freight, warehousing and distribution operations.
Renters working in that sector generally weigh a shorter drive against the type of housing
they want, and there is no single right answer — it depends on your shift and your
household.

We do not publish commute times. Drive times to any
facility depend on your exact worksite, gate, shift and the day. Confirm your worksite address
with your employer and drive the route at your real hours before you commit to an area.

If you are working shifts

Sleeping during the day

Look at bedroom placement, window start date, and how much traffic or foot noise reaches the unit mid-morning. Room-darkening curtains are worth buying before you move, not after.

Coming home at odd hours

Consider lighting and parking near the unit entrance, and how far you park from your door with hands full.

Laundry and errands

In-unit or on-site laundry matters more on a rotating schedule. So does whether a grocery store near you keeps late hours.

Roommates and household

If others in the home are on a daytime schedule, look for a layout that separates sleeping areas rather than stacking them along one wall.

Searching for an apartment from out of town

The most common mistake we see is waiting until arrival to look. Inventory moves; the unit
you saw online three weeks ago is often gone. The second most common mistake is the opposite
— sending money for a unit nobody has verified exists.

Both are avoidable. Work with a manager you can verify, tour before you sign, and apply
through an official application system rather than a person’s payment app.

  • Verify the property manager independently before sending anything
  • Tour the actual unit — self-guided, video, or in person
  • Apply through the official online application
  • Read the lease in full, including utility responsibility
  • Never wire funds or pay a deposit by gift card or payment app

Leasing remotely

We lease to out-of-town renters routinely. In practice that means a self-guided or video
tour, an online application, an electronic lease, and a scheduled key handover on your arrival
date. The full walkthrough — including the documents usually requested and what to ask
before signing — is in our
guide to renting an apartment before moving to Memphis.

Frequently asked questions

Does ELM Property Management have a relationship with FedEx?

No. We are an independent property management company. This guide exists because renters relocating for work ask us the same housing questions, and we can answer them.

I work overnight. What should I look for in an apartment?

Prioritize daytime sleep: bedroom placement away from a shared wall or parking area, room-darkening curtains, and a unit where you can control heating and cooling. Ask about quiet hours and when landscaping or maintenance work is typically scheduled.

Can I sign a lease before I relocate?

Yes. Self-guided tours, an online application and an electronic lease make it practical. See our guide to renting before moving.

How long does the application take?

It depends on how quickly your documents and references come back. Have photo ID, proof of income and rental history ready when you apply and you remove most of the delay. We cannot guarantee approval or a specific decision time.

What will my commute be?

We do not publish drive-time estimates. Check the route yourself, at your actual shift start and end times — overnight and daytime traffic differ substantially.
