Work backwards from day one, build slack where it is cheap, and know which dates you can still move after a lease is signed.
Coordinating Your Move With Day One
Working backwards from your first shift, and staying flexible while the date is still provisional.
The single most common relocation problem we see is a move-in date pinned to a start date that was never firm. The date slips two weeks, and now a lease is running against income that has not started.
It is avoidable, but only if you handle it before a lease is signed.
About travel times. We do not publish drive-time figures between our rentals and any employer site. Any travel time you see elsewhere is an estimate. Confirm your reporting address with your employer and drive the route yourself, at the hours you will actually travel it.
The distinction that matters
Before signing
Move-in dates can often be adjusted. Tell the property manager while your date is still soft, and keep them updated as it firms up.
After signing
The lease governs. That is not a property manager being difficult — it is what a lease is.
Provisional start dates
If yours is contingent on checks that have not cleared, or on any other pre-start step, treat it as provisional until it is confirmed in writing.
Buffer, not bullseye
Target a move-in a few days before day one. You want at least one day in the apartment that is not a work day.
Have a start date but no apartment yet? Tell us the date and how firm it is.
Working backwards
Almost every timeline that goes wrong was planned forwards from today instead of backwards from day one. The order below is the correction, and it is worth doing on paper before you start looking.
- Day one
Your fixed point — or your best current estimate. - Move-in
Several days earlier. Not the night before. - Lease signing and utilities
Utilities need lead time; arrange them as soon as the lease is signed. - Application
Submit once you have toured and your documents are ready. - Touring
Self-guided or video, from live availability. - Search start
Roughly 30 to 45 days before your target move-in date.
Build in slack where it is cheap
Not all slack costs the same, and knowing which kind is cheap is most of the skill. The cheapest sits at the start of the search and at the end of the move-in window: a week of extra looking, or a couple of days between collecting keys and your first shift, costs you very little and buys back nearly every mistake. The most expensive is the assumption that your furniture, your utilities and your first day at work will all land neatly on the same date. They will not, and the day they fail to is the day you have least capacity to absorb it.
Why utilities decide your real move-in date
People plan the lease and the truck, then discover that service activation and internet installation both run on their own schedules. An apartment without power in a Memphis summer is not somewhere you can reasonably sleep.
Arrange utilities the day the lease is signed, and target service being live the day before you move rather than the day of. If your move-in shifts, move the utility dates with it in the same conversation.
There is a specific version of this worth knowing before you plan around it. Under Memphis Light, Gas and Water’s own service policy, a new or first-time residential customer’s connect order is completed after a credit risk assessment, and depending on that outcome the order may be finished by phone or online — or the customer may be required to visit a community business office in person to complete it (MLGW Electric, Gas and Water Service Policy Manual, 2025, §3.1). If you are arranging a Memphis move from another state, that is the step that can quietly require you to be physically present. The same manual notes that a request to end service is worked no sooner than the next working day after you make it (§3.2), so closing an account at your old address is not a same-day action either.
Neither is a reason for alarm. Both are reasons to start the utility conversation the day the lease is signed rather than the week you move, and to ask MLGW directly what applies to you rather than assuming the online route will be available.
Keeping the timeline honest
- Confirm whether your start date is firm or provisional
- Gather application documents before you find a unit
- Ask what flexibility exists before you sign
- Target a move-in date a few days before day one
- Schedule utilities to be live the day before move-in
- Tell the property manager promptly when dates change
- Plan a first-week kit in case furniture arrives later

Frequently asked questions
What if my start date moves after I sign?
The lease terms govern from that point. Tell us anyway — we would rather know.
Can I hold a unit for a future date?
Sometimes, depending on the unit and how far out the date is. Ask before you apply so you are not applying for something that cannot match your timeline.
How long does an application take?
It depends on how quickly your documents and references come back. Preparation removes most of the delay.
Should I sign before my date is confirmed?
Search, but be cautious about signing. Tell us where things stand and we will keep you posted on what is available.
