When to start looking and when to actually apply for a Memphis apartment — and why too early is its own problem.
How Far Ahead Should You Apply?
Searching early is free. Applying too early is not always useful. Here is the difference.
There are two separate questions here, and conflating them is what causes trouble: when to start looking, and when to actually submit an application.
Looking early costs nothing. Applying is tied to a specific unit that has to still be available when you need it.
The two timelines
Start looking: 30–45 days out
Early enough to understand the market and what your budget buys, before you are under pressure.
Apply: when a real unit fits
An application is for a specific apartment. It only helps if that unit’s availability matches your date.
Too early to apply
If your move-in is three months away, most currently available units will be gone. Look, but do not expect to hold one.
Too late
Inside two weeks you are choosing from what is left rather than what fits.
If your date is uncertain
Tell us. It changes what we would even suggest you look at.
If you need something immediately
Say so plainly. Some units are ready sooner than others, and we would rather tell you the truth than waste your week.
Not sure whether it is too early? Tell us your move-in date and we will say honestly.
Why holding a unit is not simple
People often ask whether they can reserve something months ahead. Sometimes a unit can be held for a future date, and sometimes it genuinely cannot — it depends on the apartment and how far out you are. Ask before you apply, so you are not applying for something that cannot match your timeline.
The practical middle ground: start the conversation early, keep your documents ready, and be in a position to move quickly when something that actually fits appears.
A workable timeline
- 45 days out: set your budget and learn the market
- 30 days out: shortlist from current availability
- 3–4 weeks out: tour, in person or remotely
- 2–3 weeks out: apply for a specific unit
- 1–2 weeks out: sign and arrange utilities
- Move-in: a few days before your first day at work

Frequently asked questions
Can I apply six months in advance?
You can look, but an application is tied to a specific unit that is unlikely to still be available. Talk to us about timing instead.
Can you hold a unit for me?
Sometimes, depending on the apartment and the date. Ask before applying.
What if I need something next week?
Tell us plainly. We will tell you what is genuinely ready rather than what we wish were.
Does applying early improve my chances?
Being prepared does. Applying before a unit fits your timeline does not.
