Birmingham’s AI Story Just Got Much Bigger
For months, a mysterious project called “Marvel” was quietly taking shape on the southwest edge of Birmingham. Now we know who’s behind it—and the answer changes the scale of Birmingham’s emerging AI economy.
Drive southwest from downtown Birmingham toward Bessemer and the landscape begins to open up. The skyline disappears behind you, subdivisions thin out, and the remnants of Birmingham’s industrial geography begin taking over.
This is not where most people would expect to find one of the Southeast’s next great technology campuses.
That may be precisely the point.
QTS Data Centers has now publicly confirmed that it is pursuing a massive data-center campus in Bessemer known as Project Marvel. QTS is no obscure developer: it is one of the world’s major data-center operators and is backed by Blackstone, one of the largest alternative-asset managers on Earth.
And “massive” barely describes what is being contemplated.
Current plans could expand Project Marvel to approximately 1,600 acres, with as many as 18 data-center buildings totaling roughly 4.5 million square feet and ultimately requiring as much as 1.2 gigawatts of electrical capacity.
Earlier project estimates placed the potential investment around $14 billion to $14.5 billion.
For Birmingham, the most important number may actually be two.
Because Project Marvel is no longer the region’s only giant AI-infrastructure project.
First Came Nebius. Now Comes QTS.
Across the metro in Oxmoor Valley, Nebius is already developing its Birmingham AI factory around Milan Parkway.
That project was enough by itself to make Birmingham’s data-center story interesting. Nebius specifically cited Birmingham’s infrastructure and its strengths in healthcare, advanced manufacturing and technology innovation as reasons the region made sense.
One giant AI campus can be an anomaly.
Two begin to look like a pattern.
Nebius and QTS are different companies making independent capital-allocation decisions in different parts of Greater Birmingham.
Yet both have arrived at essentially the same metropolitan region.
That raises a much more consequential question:
What are they seeing in Birmingham?

Birmingham Has Something AI Suddenly Wants
For decades, the technology economy concentrated around a familiar collection of cities.
San Francisco had talent and venture capital. Northern Virginia accumulated extraordinary fiber connectivity. Seattle had cloud computing. Austin combined technology companies with Texas’s business environment.
Birmingham wasn’t really part of that conversation.
Artificial intelligence may be changing the criteria.
The largest AI campuses increasingly require things that look less like software infrastructure and more like heavy industry: hundreds of acres of land, enormous electrical connections, substations, transmission, cooling infrastructure, fiber and construction capacity.
Suddenly Birmingham’s industrial inheritance looks different.
The region has relatively affordable land. It has an established electric grid and a major utility in Alabama Power. It has engineering and construction expertise. It sits at a major Southeastern transportation crossroads. And it has enormous industrial sites that America’s most expensive technology metros struggle to reproduce.
What once looked like the physical residue of Birmingham’s old economy may be useful infrastructure for its next one.
Project Marvel Is Almost a City
The physical scale is difficult to visualize.
The original Project Marvel proposal involved roughly 700 acres. Updated planning expanded the potential footprint toward 1,600 acres.
The current concept includes 18 buildings.
Not offices.
Data-center buildings.
Together, they could encompass roughly 4.5 million square feet.
Plans have also shown multiple substations and extensive stormwater infrastructure, while the project’s potential electrical requirement has been reported at approximately 1,200 megawatts.
That is 1.2 gigawatts.
At that point, electricity isn’t simply another utility bill.
It becomes one of the defining pieces of the development.
And that is why Project Marvel matters beyond the property line.
The Infrastructure Could Outlast the First Customer
Nobody should assume that a giant data center automatically creates thousands of permanent jobs. These projects can consume extraordinary amounts of capital while employing far fewer people after construction than a comparably expensive factory.
The more interesting long-term question is what gets built around them.
A 1.2-GW campus requires electrical infrastructure. It requires specialized contractors, high-voltage expertise, fiber, cooling, controls, security and ongoing maintenance.
If Nebius builds those capabilities in Oxmoor Valley while QTS builds another enormous infrastructure ecosystem in Bessemer, Greater Birmingham begins accumulating something more durable:
the ability to build very large AI infrastructure repeatedly.
That is how clusters start.
The first project brings the customer.
The second proves the market.
Then suppliers begin asking whether they should be nearby.
The Next Birmingham Company May Be the One That Supplies Both
This is where the story could become much more economically important.
Think about what these campuses consume.
Transformers. Switchgear. Cooling equipment. Backup generation. Batteries. Power electronics. Fiber equipment. Control systems.
Companies that manufacture and service those systems suddenly have multiple enormous customers in one metropolitan area.
The question is no longer simply whether Nebius or QTS creates enough permanent jobs.
It becomes whether their presence eventually gives electrical-equipment companies, engineering firms, contractors and other suppliers a reason to establish permanent Birmingham operations.
That is the difference between hosting data centers and becoming a data-center economy.
QTS Is Already Acting Like It Plans to Stay
There is another subtle clue.
QTS recently became the lead corporate supporter of Bessemer Built, a new scholarship initiative offering eligible Bessemer City High School graduates at least $10,000 toward tuition at participating Alabama colleges beginning with the class of 2027.
The program is planned through 2030 and also includes workforce training in technology and skilled trades.
A scholarship program doesn’t prove how large Project Marvel ultimately becomes.
But it tells us something about time horizon.
QTS is beginning to build a relationship with Bessemer that extends years into the future while its campus is still being developed.
The company itself says it wants to become a long-term partner in the community.
That looks less like speculative land banking and more like an organization preparing to operate here.
There Is Another Side to Marvel
A project this large inevitably creates controversy.
Residents around the proposed site have raised concerns about electricity demand, water consumption, environmental effects, nearby homes and the secrecy surrounding the development process.
Those concerns are legitimate parts of the story.
A project contemplating approximately 1.2 GW of power is not invisible infrastructure. It has consequences for utilities, land use and surrounding communities.
The extraordinary scale that makes Marvel economically interesting is exactly what makes scrutiny necessary.
Birmingham’s challenge will be proving that it can capture the benefits of AI infrastructure while establishing rules that residents consider credible.
That balance could ultimately determine whether the region becomes attractive to the third major operator.
Because the Third One Is What Really Matters
This may be the most important question now.
Nebius can be dismissed as one company choosing Birmingham.
QTS makes that harder.
If another major hyperscale operator follows, the conversation changes completely.
At that point Birmingham is no longer trying to become an AI-infrastructure market.
It is one.
And there is a reason to think the region could attract more attention.
Birmingham itself has already adopted a specific regulatory framework for hyperscale data centers. Alabama Power is gaining experience serving enormous compute loads. Local contractors are gaining relevant expertise. Landowners understand what these operators need. Economic-development organizations know how to work these projects.
Every completed project lowers the learning curve for the next one.
Birmingham’s Technology Future May Look Surprisingly Industrial
There is something wonderfully Birmingham about all of this.
The city became famous because geology made it unusually good at heavy industry. Coal, iron ore and limestone existed close together, and an entire economy emerged around turning enormous quantities of energy and raw material into steel.
AI is obviously not steel.
But the physical economics have a strange resemblance.
An AI factory takes enormous amounts of electricity and enormously expensive machinery and turns them into compute.
It needs land.
It needs power.
It needs cooling.
It needs specialized engineering.
It attracts suppliers.
And once billions of dollars of fixed infrastructure have been installed, moving somewhere else becomes considerably harder.
Birmingham understands that kind of economy.
Perhaps better than anyone expected.
The Magic City’s Next Raw Material Could Be Electricity
The Birmingham of the twentieth century transformed minerals into steel.
The Birmingham emerging today could develop another industrial equation.
In Oxmoor Valley, Nebius is building AI infrastructure.
In Bessemer, QTS is planning Project Marvel at potentially enormous scale.
Around UAB and Southern Research, Birmingham already possesses one of the country’s substantial medical and biotechnology ecosystems.
To the west, hundreds of acres of former steel land are being prepared for advanced industry.
The pieces aren’t automatically connected.
But increasingly, they are occupying the same map.
That makes Project Marvel much more than another data-center announcement.
It is the second major piece of evidence that the physical characteristics Birmingham inherited from its industrial past—land, electricity, engineering and infrastructure—may have unexpected value in the AI economy.
One giant AI project is interesting.
Two are a signal.
The third could tell us that Birmingham has entered an entirely new era.
